A North Kingstown native and a cornerstone of the local musical community, Fred Scheff has served as the Cantor at Temple Shalom since 1995. Throughout his tenure, Fred has been a guiding musical presence, leading the congregation in song and introducing them to Jewish music spanning ancient to contemporary styles. With a Cantorial career beginning in 1970, Fred has served communities at Temple Habonim, Lawrence Jewish Community Center, and Temple Beth David. An alumnus of Rhode Island College, Fred holds a bachelor of music and later, he went on to earn a Master of Music and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from Kansas University.
Fred’s musical footprint extends beyond the pulpit. Fred Scheff is a veteran of music, with over 1,600 stage appearances in opera, concerts, and oratorio nationwide. He has obtained a wealth of world-class experience, which he now shares to his students as a teacher. Currently, Fred teaches at the Music School of the Rhode Island Philharmonic and serves as an adjunct faculty member at the same Rhode Island College he once studied at, mentoring the voices of the future.
